Wheel Throwing Sessions

Whether you're brand new to clay or looking to sharpen your skills, our regular wheel throwing sessions offer a hands-on, high-quality pottery experience. Learn the fundamentals—or pick up where you left off—in a fun, focused environment led by professional potters.

What you can expect:​

  • Expert teachers with plenty of 1:1 support (max 6 students per class)

  • Beginners: learn wedging, centering, throwing bowls and cylinders, and trimming

  • Intermediates: build on your technique with advanced guidance

  • Beautiful, calm, centrally located studio- just 1 min walk from stations

  • Free tea, great tunes & relaxed friendly vibes

*Firing and in-studio dip glazing of your pieces will be an extra charge of £5 - £10 depending on size.  You can also glaze your work yourself at a Glazing Tutorial which we hold on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights from 6pm*

Barnaby Hosking

​

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2003, Barnaby has exhibited internationally, working across video installation, sculpture, painting and printing. His subjects explore art-making processes and his connection with nature.

Since 2014 he has developed his ceramic practice as artist and teacher through Dalston Clay. Trained in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), he lives and works between Dalston and North Norfolk, roaming between barn, yurt and camper van.

Emma Ohlstein

 

Emma is an artist and designer; her portfolio contains many different mediums such as graphic design, ceramics, and sculpture. While she loves creating new work, her favorite medium to work with is ceramics. The ability to use the clay to create new experimental forms while being useful pieces of work fascinates her. Emma’s ceramic work aims to capture the essence, and energy of life rooted in wanderlust and exploration of both the planet and one’s self.

Ben Nichols

 

Ben is a London-based potter from rural Kent, drawn to the wheel since childhood. His practice centers on deep respect for clay's versatility and responsiveness, creating pieces that balance intention with spontaneity—blending traditional technique and contemporary design.

​

After studying Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins, he continued evolving his work across London studios, producing, experimenting, and teaching. He's passionate about creating functional yet expressive pieces and helping others discover clay's tactile, meditative process. He aims to foster creative spaces that encourage curiosity, skill-building, and meaningful connection to craft.

Malory

​

Malory is a Canadian ceramic artist and art tutor currently working between London and Kent. After graduating from NSCAD University with a BFA - majoring in Ceramics and minoring in Art History (2016), Malory has continued both a professional practice selling and exhibiting her work internationally and teaching practice, sharing her passion and knowledge for all things clay. 

 

Malory is delighted to join Dalston Clay where she hopes to inspire and welcome all those interested in beginning or building upon the foundation of both creative and practical skills. Offering beginner, intermediate and advanced throwing courses, join a wonderful community and positive wellbeing practice within the search for creative expression through the art and craft of ceramics!

As a CIC and Social Enterprise, it is our intention is to make Dalston Clay a studio that is available to everyone, regardless of financial circumstance. While we need to function as a business, we never want money to be the reason why someone can't benefit from what we've built.
